There's one thing I've never totally understood & I admit, I'm guilty of doing it as I'm sure most of you are...some might not realize it & some of you go out of your way to do it.
What I'm talking about is Inter-Metal genre hating & I think it's safe to say that today it's an epidemic!
Whether it be the tough forum guys, 'true' kids who werent born when the music they defend was written or just ripping on someone for wearing a shirt you dont like. In one way or another this has happened since the beginning. But it's not like it used to be...it's much worse
In the early to mid 80's for example; Glam guys hating thrash guys, thrash guys hating glam guys, skinheads hating thrash guys & this went on & on. Everyone wanted their place & everyone wanted to be better than the other guy. Whether it be the thrash, glam, hardcore & punk guys, these people faught, argued & did the hard yards so Metal could be what it is today.
Everything starts somewhere & of course there needs to be the teething period. But we don't need to do that anymore & because we dont need to you would think as fans that we would be little appreciative right? Wrong.
You're probably thinking "but how can words be worse than a bunch of guys belting each other?". Words are weapons
Magizines & websites do their best to pretend like it's not happening. They promote Lacuna Coil next to Napalm Death like it's no big deal (which is reality it isnt), but now more than ever with the internet opening us up to so many avenues of communication the hate spreads & it spreads quick!
This is slowly killing the community that we as Metalheads have built for ourselves. You go to another country & someone in a black shirt, long hair or just has that universally known 'Metal' look, you know that dude would probably let you stay at his house & sleep with his wife. Metal is a brotherhood, it's a brotherhood that is tearing itself a part.
There's no doubt about it, labels put on music caused this problem & we let it get the better of us. Yes absolutely there needs to a genre to classify this music & there is one, METAL. Why does there need to be so much segregation in our music? You dont see pop or country with dozens of sub-genres.
9/10 if you actually heard the music before someone said "oh they're Nu Metal" or maybe "They are a Deathcore band" you would probably dig them. Another area where we go wrong here is a bands presentation, it's necessary for some bands to dress a little different to tight jeans & a band shirt, again if you heard the music 1st I think you'd secretly be thinking "I can't tell my friends I really like the new Deathstars song"
It's all Metal. Strapping Young Lad, Nightwish, Slipknot, Trivium, Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Godsmack or Linkin Park.
Obviously not everyone will agree with me, but thats the point of a blog right? If you're reading this & dont like it then no doubt you'll tell me...or be go back to ripping on bands via Blabbermouth
Till next time...
